Built For Everyone
The Free Edit is built to be usable by as many people as possible, regardless of ability or how you’re browsing — keyboard only, screen reader, reduced motion, or otherwise.
Specifics
- Fully keyboard operable. Every interactive element on this site can be reached and operated with just a keyboard, and a “Skip to content” link is the first thing focused on every page, so you don’t have to tab through the header on every visit.
- Visible focus indicators. Every focusable element shows a clear outline when reached by keyboard, checked to meet WCAG’s contrast requirements in both light and dark mode.
- Compliant color contrast. Text and interface colors were measured against WCAG AA thresholds (4.5:1 for body text, 3:1 for large text and interface components) and adjusted where they fell short.
- Respects your motion preference. If your system is set to reduce motion, this site’s animations and transitions are disabled rather than politely ignoring that setting.
- Respects your color scheme preference. Light and dark mode follow your operating system’s setting automatically, with a manual toggle if you’d rather override it.
- Works with JavaScript off. The tool directory, its content, and its navigation all function without JavaScript — expandable tool cards use the browser’s native disclosure behavior rather than depending on a script to work at all.
- Labeled for screen readers. Icons and icon-only controls carry real accessible names (not decorative guesses), and purely decorative elements are hidden from assistive technology so they don’t add noise.
This site aims to conform to WCAG 2.1 Level AA.
Disclaimers
- Each tool card links out to that tool’s own website, which we don’t control — their accessibility is their own.
- Some content (tool descriptions, downloadable assets) is added by a human editor over time; if something’s missing proper labeling, it’s an oversight to fix, not a design decision.
