Privacy & Cookies

The Free Edit is a free directory of tools for web designers. This policy explains what little data this site collects, why, and what you can do about it.
What this site doesn’t do
The Free Edit doesn’t have user accounts, doesn’t have a comments section, and doesn’t sell or share any data with advertisers or data brokers. Every tool listed links out to that tool’s own website — once you click through, you’re on their site, governed by their privacy policy, not this one.
The “Submit a Tool” form
If you use the form to suggest a tool, I collect the tool’s name, URL, and the description you write. If you choose to leave your email address, I only use it to follow up if I have a question about the submission — it’s optional, and it’s never published or shared. Submissions are stored privately and are only visible to me; I delete ones I don’t end up using.
Analytics
This site uses Google Analytics to understand how many people visit and which pages are useful, in aggregate — I don’t use it to identify individual visitors. The analytics script only runs after you actively consent to it via the cookie banner; if you decline or ignore the banner, no analytics cookie is set and no data is sent to Google. You can withdraw consent at any time by clearing your cookies or using the cookie preferences link in the site footer.
Cookies and local storage
- Theme preference (light/dark mode): stored in your browser’s local storage, never sent to any server. This is purely so the site remembers your choice on your next visit.
- Cookie consent choice: a small essential cookie remembers whether you’ve accepted or declined analytics cookies, so you’re not asked every visit. This one is required for the consent banner to function and isn’t itself a tracking cookie.
- Analytics cookies: set by Google Analytics only after you consent, as described above.
Server logs
Like virtually every website, the hosting server automatically logs standard technical information (IP address, browser type, pages requested) for security and performance troubleshooting. These logs aren’t cross-referenced with any personal identity.
Your rights
If you’ve given me your email address through the submission form and want it deleted, or want to know what data (if any) I hold about you, email me and I’ll sort it out.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes in any meaningful way, I’ll update the date at the top of this page.
